Shayna Gelender

Shayna is the Managing Director for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California where ensures that staff, board, and volunteers are effectively trained, supervised, and supported such that they consistently produce high-quality work to advance civil liberties and grow the organization. 

For the past fifteen years, Shayna has worked for the ACLU of Northern California in various positions: Youth Advocate, Field Assistant, Field Coordinator, Organizer, and Organizing Director. 
In her capacity as Organizing Director, she re-vamped the organization’s grassroots efforts into a strategic organizing program focused on recruitment, retention, and leadership development through local and state policy advocacy. The ACLU of Northern California now has a robust chapter program where clusters of volunteer leaders across Northern and Central California partner with staff to advocate for civil liberties. Shayna also created a successful statewide, annual ACLU of California Conference & Lobby Day that draws hundreds of ACLU activists to the Capitol each year.
For a decade, Shayna has been involved with the Bay Area Region of Bend the Arc, as a campaign volunteer, Regional Council Member, and most recently as Chair of the Regional Council. 
Shayna holds B.A. from Mills College and lives with her partner in Alameda, CA.
