We're fighting to protect immigrants in NY

It’s official: our New York Chapter is joining a statewide campaign to make New York safer for immigrant communities.

President Trump’s hateful, anti-immigrant agenda puts immigrants in our state at heightened risk for deportation and separation from their families.

At our chapter meeting on Monday night, we heard the story of an undocumented man on Long Island who was stopped by local police for a supposed broken taillight. Because the local law enforcement in his town collaborates with ICE, he was detained within hours and ultimately deported.

This story breaks my heart — but in the era of Trump, it's the reality that many of our neighbors are living with.

That’s why we’re joining Make the Road NY, The New York Civil Liberties Union, and other partners in the campaign to advance the New York State Liberty Act: Because all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, deserve to live and work without fear of deportation.

Our New York chapter votes to make passing the Liberty Act their next campaign

Our New York Chapter unanimously voted to take on the campaign to pass the NYS Liberty Act. Share the news:

If passed, the Liberty Act would:

  • Ensure that local and state law enforcement do not collaborate with federal immigration enforcement (ICE)
  • Prohibit local and state law enforcement from stopping, questioning, and arresting people based on perceived immigration status
  • Provide funding for legal representation for folks facing deportation

At my core, I’m guided by the Jewish value that every person deserves to be treated with dignity. I’m proud that our chapter is organizing the Jewish community to fight for a New York that lives up to this value by protecting immigrant families.

Our communal history compels us to send a message to the Trump administration: As Jews, we know what it’s like to be scapegoated — and we refuse to be complicit in the dehumanization of our immigrant neighbors now.

I know our community has a crucial role to play in this fight. In the coming weeks, we’ll be in touch to share how you can join our campaign to take action. Let’s get to work to build a New York that lives up to the promise etched on the Statue of Liberty — a New York that welcomes and protects all who yearn to breathe free.
